Search Engine Optimization - The TITLE Tag

The Title Tag goes between these two tags: <TITLE> and </TITLE>

The <Title> tag is still one of the most important tags, use it wisely.

Site Title is critical part of optimization your site for two reasons.

  • Page Title tells the Search Engines what your site is all about. This will be an important factor in determining relevance and ultimately, the Search Ranking.

  • Page Title will become the headline on the Search Engines result page when the site is listed. A good headline attracts users to read the description and ultimately click on the link to the site. This will decide the site Click Through Rate.

The Title tag should be between 4 and 60 characters long, or thereabout, and preferably over 30. If the title isn't descriptive enough it may not receive a good ranking from the robots. Be sure to include keywords you want to rank well for in the title, because it is one of the most important ranking components of the page.

The Title tag must also fulfill those three objectives:

  • Must be keyword-rich

  • Must convey the benefits

  • Must be targeted and specific

Do not repeat words here or the engines will penalize your ranking for the repeated words. Then, whatever your title says is what you want it to say at the top of your visible page, preferably in H /H tags. This way the spider can read the title in the meta tag, compare it to the page, see that it adds up, and will rank the page better.

Do not use filler words (filtered words are known as Stop Words) like.: “the, a, an, it, etc.” as they do not add any weight to your Search Engine Ranking.

Don't call your pages "Untitled Document" or the name of the company "company name".

Put your priority keyword at the start of the title tag. The words at the beginning score highest of all.

Use upper and lower case in the title tag, for several reasons:

  • It is easier to read

  • It looks right (see it from the surfer side)

  • Using ALL CAPS looks bush-league.

Give every single page on the site a complete and meaningful <title>. Google offers the allintitle syntax, which lets users search only text that appears in a page title. There are over 3 million results returned for Untitled Document. Each Title must go hand in hand with the keywords for the page.

Nothing is more embarrassing than having your site titles and description cut off midstream. As a guide use: Title and Description Chart.

Do not: Use multiple instances of the same tag. For example, using more than one title tag. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
